Eating locally produced food in Scaynes Hill

13 March Posted by Vicky Breen

With spring upon us and the days getting longer, we can at last see a glimpse of the new growth, the new food, the new life all around us.

After a wet and windy winter we can finally start to get excited about the fresh produce starting to appear at farmers markets and our local farm shops. There is no questioning the fantastic taste, flavour and nutrients of locally produced and bought seasonal food. You are doing your bit for the environment by reducing your food miles. You are supporting your local farmers by eating their locally produced food. And in case you needed another reason, seasonal food is often cheaper due to reduced transportation and storage time.  But most importantly, foods are at their best, full of flavour and nutrients when eaten in season.

Butterbox Farm produces some fabulous beef boxes to purchase and their steaks provide a tasty treat at The Sloop Inn at their regular steak nights.  Just up the road is the fabulous High Weald Dairy which sells its organic cheeses nationwide but we are lucky enough to be able to pick it up in our local farm shops and delicatessens.  Of course you don't have to stroll far down the country lanes to pick up some fresh eggs at a fraction of the supermarket prices.  Oakgates Fruit Farm sell seasonal fruit and veg and offer a pick your own option during the summer which is always great to get the children involved. And of course at the end of a long day, make sure you have picked up a bottle of Cloudy Ridge from South Down Wine Cellars produced at Rock Lodge Farm.  With so much available on our doorstep, there is little excuse not to enjoy the spring harvest all around us.

In Scaynes Hill we are surrounded by an abundance of first class locally produced food.

This is the first of two articles about local foods by Vicky Breen of South Downs Nutrition, based in Scaynes Hill. The second, which will be published shortly, will cover local Farm Shops.
